Finding Extended Family in Cameroon

County Executive Jack Johnson recently announced that Prince George’s has entered into a “Sister City Agreement” with the Njiwka Council from Republic of Cameroon.

“I am honored that you are here and I celebrate this moment in time for our county and Njiwka,” said Johnson before signing the agreement. “This new Sister City relationship is not only very important to me, but will be mutually very beneficial to all of Prince George’s County and all our brothers and sisters of Njiwka.”

Officials say the new relationship will spur charitable, trade and commerce, literary and educational activities between the two jurisdictions. Additionally, it’s also designed to encourage the exchange of ideas and information in a wide variety of economic, social, cultural, environmental, professional, technical, youth and other endeavors.

Njiwka Mayor Lazerus Aziah was also on hand for the official signing, which took place during a special reception that highlighted the vision and partnership between Cameroon and Prince George’s that was initiated in Johnson’s most recent trade mission to Cameroon.

Johnson’s taken the lead in creating alliances with a number of countries, which has expanded the county’s global reach. For instance, last year he opened the Africa Trade Office in cooperation with the U.S. government.

The Africa Trade Office is the first and only office of its kind in the nation. It was created to help businesses across Africa engage in direct relationships with U.S.-based firms. Special emphasis is placed on local companies in Prince George’s and the entire D.C. region to partner with companies in African countries including Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon, South Africa, Uganda, Malawi, Tanzania, and Ethiopia.
