Community Digs Bladensburg's History

Digging for artifacts

Bladensburg recently became the flashpoint for an archaeological investigation into the community’s role in the War of 1812. A team of archaeologists from the Maryland Transportation Department’s State Highway Administration, the University of Maryland, and the Maryland Historical Trust are sifting through the remains of the Market Master’s House, one of the oldest, and perhaps, last standing original post offices in the country. The small house that still stands was built circa 1760 by an affluent English merchant. The project was opened to community participation in which visitors helped to screen soil and pick out artifacts. The progress of the archaeologists can be followed at http://bladenarch.blogspot.com.
