The popular 2019 Volkswagen Golf reaches the end of another life cycle this year to make way for a new generation, which goes on sale in Europe for the 2020 model year. The fun-to-drive compact Golf has had a successful run since it was first introduced in 1974, selling over 35 million vehicles worldwide.
The 2019 VW Golf comes in a range of models in the U.S., including a base four-door and hatchback, the GTI and R hatchback performance models. The new model is expected to come to the U.S. sometime next year.
The 2019 Golf line-up offers practicality, the latest safety technology, fun-to-drive sporty performance, and fuel efficiency. All models come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.
The base model comes in two trim levels - the S and SE which start at $24,145 MSRP. Both editions are front-wheel-drive in 4-door or hatchback. They are powered by a 1.4-liter engine that generates 147 horsepower that is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The 2019 GTI is a sportier version of the Golf that is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 228 horsepower. The GTI comes in four trim levels that includes the GTI 2.0T S for $27,995, the 2.0T Rabbit Edition for $28,895; the 2.0t SE for $31,795 and the 2.0T Autobahn for $35,995. All models offer 4-door or hatchback.
My favorite is the 2019 Volkswagen Rabbit, a limited edition of the GTI Golf with sportier performance and advanced features, glossy black 18-inch wheels, and is highlighted by red exterior and interior trim. The Rabbit gets many of the same features as the turbocharged Golf R, such as start/stop, fuel saving, launch control, and larger autonomous braking.
The Golf R hatchback is powered by a sport-tuned 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine that generates 288 horsepower at 280 lb-ft torque. The Golf R starts at $37,990 MSRP. The R comes in a single trim level with Dynamic Chassis Control, adaptive suspension and navigation.
The U.S. will only get the Golf GTI and R hatchbacks. No word yet on the base models or dealer delivery. According to Autoblog.com, it will have a sleeker digital cockpit with a larger touchscreen to operate the next generation of VWs infotainment and apps.
