Summer has unofficially arrived and with it exposure to the bright, blistering sun’s light and ultraviolet (UV) rays. Longer daylight hours give opportunities to spend more time outdoors, at the beach, swimming, etc. and therefore, raises the exposure to harmful UV rays. Most people are aware to use sunscreens with high SPF protection for their skin, but what about the eyes?

Donning hats and sunglasses are the easiest and cheapest way to protect eyes from sun and UV exposure. UV protecting sunglasses will keep eyes stress-free and healthier.

While this is a light and airy item about trending sunglasses for 2019, the seriousness of eye exposure to the sun must be addressed-Ophthalmologists stress the importance of protecting one’s eyes from exposure to the sun. The most common Ultraviolet ray-UVA- can pass through the cornea, through the lens and in to the retina where cells can be damaged.  The sun reflecting off of water or snow (eye damage can occur year round) can cause damage to eyes. Looking directly at the sun (even when there is no eclipse) can cause solar retinopathy- damage to the eye’s retina. These types of exposures raise the risks of eye diseases such as cataracts, pterygium (growths on the eye), and cancer.

Protecting the eyes throughout one’s life will see them in good stead in advanced years.
