The ConnectTech Networking Initiative Brings Together Community Professionals to Explore AI and Technology

By Braelyn Thayer

The ConnectTech Networking sessions kicked off on August 6 – a tech hub networking event that invites tech professionals, entrepreneurs, and innovators to collectively explore how to advance technology in Prince George's County. With the aim of establishing a broader technology community, ConnectTech is inspired by the Prince George's County Artificial Intelligence Task Force, which focuses on incorporating Artificial Intelligence and innovative technologies within the community.

Council Member Wala Blegay (District 6), a key partner, emphasized ConnectTech’s community-building role: “The purpose is to establish community and connect IT professionals together.” The event highlights professional networking but also emphasizes mentorship, collaboration, and workforce development as Prince George's County seeks to become a technology corridor.

The most recent event drew in over 75 attendees from organizations such as the Prince George's County Tech Council, NASA Goddard, and the University of Maryland. ConnectTech fosters a collective presence from the government, academic institutions, as well as private sector representation, which created a dynamic environment for shared expertise.

More appearances from local officials such as Vernard Wright, Chief Information Officer and Director of the county’s Office of Information Technology and chair of the County’s AI Task Force, were a major contributor to the event. Wright’s professional background offered a wealth of insight into how Prince George's County could apply Artificial Intelligence to be in step with a growing AI economy.

Participants for the event such as Danielle Morris, a local AI Consultant, said “I’ve already collaborated with two entrepreneurs I met here, and we’re working on a pilot project that uses AI to streamline logistics for small businesses. This is exactly the type of connection I was hoping to make.” In the first few months, ConnectTech has facilitated three partnership agreements, sparked discussion on AI ethics and workforce training, and established a mentorship pipeline for University of Maryland students to grow in tech.

In September, ConnectTech will host a panel on how AI can be applied in everyday business. In October, the series will feature an entrepreneurship expo and pitch night where innovators present their ideas to investors and community leaders.

ConnectTech is more than a networking event - it is quickly becoming a cornerstone for Prince George’s County’s tech community.
