Globetrotting, trailblazing, sui generis musician Pat Metheny brings a wide range of music from his storied career to Strathmore. Metheny has put together a band that includes a select group of musicians, that he says is hand-picked for their ability to “cover the widest range of everything I’ve done previously and…develop into something beyond that.” Joining Metheny this year will be his long-time drummer Antonio Sanchez, bassist Linda Oh, and British pianist Gwilym Simcock, one of the most exciting new pianists to emerge from the UK in many years.
- Metheny was recently inducted into the Downbeat Hall of Fame as its youngest member and only the fourth guitarist—joining Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, and Wes Montgomery.
- Metheny served as artist in residence for the Detroit Jazz Festival, performing with his own ensembles, his longtime associate Gary Burton, and in a newly formed duet partnership with legendary Miles Davis bassist Ron Carter.
- Drummer Antonio Sanchez’s score for the Oscar-winning Alejandro Iñárritu film Birdman was nominated for a Golden Globe and a 2016 Grammy, as well as dozens of other prizes around the world.
