Tom Hanks, an avid typewriter collector, is releasing his first book of short stories, Uncommon Type, which is filled with typewriters, and with stories about dreams and nightmares come true. Hanks follows an Eastern European man from his war-torn home to a new life in America and explores how bowling a string of perfect games changes a man's relationship to his favorite pastime. In other stories, he mines complex family dynamics, gives us a sharp inside look at a popular actor, and revels in a literal flight of fancy, sending four friends to the moon in their homemade rocket-ship. Hanks will be in conversation with Ann Patchett, owner of Parnassus Books and author of novels including Bel Canto, State of Wonder, andCommonwealth.
