Chanticleer
My Secret Heart
Hosted by Mason Bates
Free after-party with DJ Ayes Cold
Hailed as "the world's reigning male chorus" by the New Yorker, Grammy®-winning a cappella ensemble Chanticleer is known for the seamless blend of its 12 male voices and original interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz to popular contemporary compositions.
In My Secret Heart, hosted by genre-defying Kennedy Center Composer-in-Residence Mason Bates, the San Francisco-based supergroup will perform works by songwriters who long to penetrate hidden places of the heart with a wide range of emotions: fond to foolish, feverish to forbidden. The program will include poetry from the likes of the ancient Song of Songs, as well as popular and classical airs of our day. Music by contemporary luminaries includes a D.C. premiere by Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi that examines the Nordic heart; American composer Augusta Read Thomas's "Love Songs" featured on Chanticleer's Grammy®-winning Colors of Love album; and the world premiere of Mason Bates's Kennedy Center co-commissioned "Drum-Taps," set to poetry by Walt Whitman.
