The Chantels, who began their journey in 1956, are considered one of the best girl groups of the 1950s. The five girls; Arlene Smith, Renee Minus, Jacqulyn Landry, Sonia Goring and Lois Harris had all attended St. Anthony of Padua Elementary School in the Bronx, New York and were members of the Catholic Church choir. Their unique sound was rooted in the liturgical music of that church, which is why some people say they sound like “angels”. Their hits include“Maybe” “Look in My Eyes” and “He’s Gone”. To this day, the current members of the Chantels; Lois Harris, Renee Minus, Sonia Goring and Ami Ortiz, continue to captivate audiences with their hit tunes that take you back to the 1950s.
