Wellman draws from her experience in the plastic and the mathematical arts to examine her mother’s enjoyment in “playing the numbers.” She looks at her mother’s meticulous organization and sources of inspiration as a process of hope, drawing a parallel to the experiences of others, with numbers across cultures, history, and time.
