Katherine Hart has always been a scavenger, drawn to finding bits and pieces, cast off or lost items, pieces of paper with partial information, rusted metal and hardware. They have an unknown history, a previous life, and she is intrigued with the idea of removing them from their original intent and giving them a new function.
In this new encaustic work, a process by which color pigments are mixed with hot beeswax, Katherine is deliberately juxtaposing and layering images that, upon first glance do not relate to each other. She sees these images as a starting place, an invitation to fill in the missing pieces, an opening line to a story that will be different for each viewer. She is hopeful that each person seeing this work, will bring his or her own interpretations to it.
