Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. This year Washington National Cathedral will light the west façade in celebration and in honor of Juneteenth.

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers made it to Galveston, TX with news that the enslaved were now free. Juneteenth, also called Freedom Day, Liberation Day and Emancipation Day, is a celebration of African-American freedom and achievement.

At the Cathedral, has a house of prayer for all people, we strive to serve God and our neighbors as agents of reconciliation and a trusted voice of moral leadership. We commit to the work of building the beloved community and ending racism. We strive to build a community where all, as children of God, are judged as equals. Join as we celebrate this joyous day of liberation and work towards a just and equitable world for all.
