The Prince George's County African American Museum and Cultural Center, in partnership with Banneker-Douglass Museum, Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture, National Museum of African American History and Culture, Creative Edge Collaborative, Mansa Colabs and UMD Collaboratory. are hosting a virtual lecture by Dr. Chris Bonner about the history and legacy of the Reconstruction Era and Freedom Bureau. The lecture will be followed by a demo of the Smithsonian Freedmen's Bureau Transcription Project.
Guest speaker, Christopher Bonner specializes in African American history, particularly black protest in the early United States. He is at work on a manuscript titled "The Price of Citizenship," which examines black activists' efforts to construct American citizenship before the passage of the Fourteenth Amendment. His teaching interests include African American politics and culture, slavery and emancipation in the Atlantic world, and race and ethnicity in early America.
