Soheil Ghannadan won the Best Actor Award at the 2021 Moscow International Film Festival for his moving performance as the titular character in this blend of tragedy and dark humor. He plays Hamid, a forty-something slacker who still lives—and constantly bickers with—his mother, and burns with jealousy towards his brother, who found success in the United States after emigrating twenty years ago. When his mother suddenly dies, Hamid is consumed with loneliness and tries to befriend both a woman in his building and another woman he meets on the street. He also makes a very curious decision about what to do with his mother’s body. Making her feature debut, director Noushin Meraji balances a range of emotional tones and creates a complex protagonist who is by turns naïve, angry, and vulnerable. (Dir.: Noushin Meraji, Iran, 2021, 85 min., Persian with English subtitles)
