Alfredo Ortíz is an artist from Puerto Rico. In his work, he observes people in bohemias and tertulias (art-related gatherings) and creates intricate drawings of these scenes. Ortíz’s work highlights snippets of moments or seconds and often disregards scale and perspective in a playful way. His work is also heavily influenced by mid-century styles of art in the Hispanic Caribbean area, where “el Arte del Cartel” (or Poster Art), illustration, and all printmaking techniques are considered another form of high art. When he is suddenly inspired, he will grab anything and start drawing on it (such as large napkins, cardboard, or wood).
