Is it surprising that the British rock bands Traffic and Blind Faith burned like comets across clear night skies? When keyboard wizard and blue-eyed soul singer Steve Winwood (from the Spencer Davis Group) got together with Chris Wood (woodwinds), Jim Capaldi (drums), and Dave Mason (guitar), sparks certainly flew, and when Winwood put Traffic on ice to form Blind Faith with Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton (both recently departed from Cream) and Ric Grech, BOOM, there you had another alignment of fire in the sky. What surprise and agreement we have now in The Medicated Headsmen - a constellation of music veterans who have also crisscrossed with each other on the sky of the DC music scene for two decades: Singer and guitarist Bobby Thompson, a local blues avatar; bassist Larry Joseloff and piano/organ man Will Layman of the soul/funk ensemble Ten Feet Tall and a dozen other jam junctions; and drummer Ben Tufts, known as one of DC’s best musicians, and who has played with all of the above for years. The combination is a shock and a comfort, startling and familiar. That The Medicated Headsmen can bring to life the music of Traffic, Blind Faith and all those quivering intersections is no surprise.
