NOI+F offers a two-act evening of monumental works, both old and new: Mahler's Symphony No. 2—and Kinsfolknem, by the Emmy Award-winning composer Jasmine Arielle Barnes. This rousing new concerto—co-commissioned by the Aspen Music Festival and School, Carnegie Hall and NOI+F—revels in the heightened idioms of blues and gospel tradition, layered with masterful solos performed by a guest selection of Black principal players from leading orchestras, including Demarre McGill (flute), Anthony McGill (clarinet), Titus Underwood (oboe) and Andrew Brady (bassoon). A founding member of The Blacknificent 7 composer collective, which counts Jessie Montgomery and Damien Geter among its ranks, Barnes makes her NOI+F debut under the baton of crowd-favorite conductor and NOI+F Music Director, Marin Alsop. The evening concludes with Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 2, a work initially regarded with surprise for its power, scope and creative force. The Baltimore Choral Arts Society joins the orchestra in the final movement with soaring voices to mark the themes of death, redemption and eternal life.
