Set between Birmingham, Alabama, and late-1980s New York, the musical follows Raymond Tyler Jr., a young attorney torn between expectations and his true desires. After a passionate encounter with football star Kelvin Ellis, Raymond leaves the South for New York's "City of Second Chances." There he finds a chosen family and falls for Broadway starlet Nicole Springer, who offers marriage and the life he thinks he wants. When Kelvin returns, Raymond can no longer keep love, sexuality, faith, and family separate. As relationships intersect with the HIV/AIDS crisis, secrecy has dire consequences, forcing decisions about love, forgiveness, and living honestly. Featuring an original score by Ashford & Simpson, the show blends R&B, gospel, soul, and house into a theatrical celebration of Black LGBTQ+ life, chosen family, love, and resilience, offering romance, humor, sensuality, heartbreak, and hope.
