  • Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Gildenhorn Recital Hall 8270 Alumni Drive College Park, MD, 20742 United States (map)

Maryland Opera Studio is proud to present the world premiere of recently-discovered excerpts of Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko’s first opera, Harkusha. A composer, pianist and musicologist, Lysenko was a foundational figure in Ukrainian music, with works for solo piano, chamber music, art song, choral music and opera. In an evening led by Dr. Roman Koropeckyj (UCLA), Dr. Michael Lavery (UMD), and Dr. Olga Haldey (UMD) and featuring members of the Maryland Opera Studio, this program explores Harkusha and the evolution of Lysenko’s vocal music in conversation with influential works of Verdi, Weber, Glinka and others.
