His Schubertiade recalls Schubert’s intimate musical gatherings, while Joan Tower’s Love Returns, an NSO co-commission written for saxophonist Steven Banks, carries that spirit forward. Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 3 closes the program with all the trappings of the composer’s unmistakable, impassioned style.
