First Baptist Church of Glenarden Celebrates 100 Years At Family Cook Out
By Lauren Poteat
In 1917, a small group of fellow residents gathered inside of a small modest home, reading text from a meager bible, in hopes of serving the Lord.
One hundred years later, the First Baptist Church of Glenarden is now an over 160 acre plot of land, featuring two massive worships centers, radio and video stations, over 10 separate ministry divisions and thousands of residents, once including former President George W. Bush II, who all eagerly flock to hear the “good word” weekly, inside the historic African American church.
In tribute to a long storied history and acknowledging their presence during pivotal movements in time (including civil rights and the election of former President Barack Obama), the notable church welcomes members and residents to a free homecoming celebration Aug. 12.
“I thank God for the First Baptist Church of Glenarden and Riverdale Baptist because it takes more than one church and one organization to reach everybody,” Elder R. Kevin Mathews said in a statement.
