Perfection Revisited!

Perfection Revisited!

Ian Harmon

The Dance Theatre of Harlem has traveled the world with its special style of ballet and on February 1 they plan to put on another fantastic performance - this time in Prince George’s County.

World-renowned ballet company Dance Theatre of Harlem will perform at the Center for Performing Arts at Prince George’s Community College.  For 50 years, audiences have been wowed by legendary dance performances.  The 18-member, multi-ethnic company performs a forward-thinking repertoire that includes treasured classics, neoclassical works by George Balanchine and resident choreographer Robert Garland.  Shows take place February 1.  The College will host a special reception immediately after the evening show.

Additionally, students and community members can participate in a special lecture January 31.  This informal presentation provides an inside look at the art of classical ballet. From the training and preparation of a dance artist through the elements of choreography and stage craft, the viewer is given an intimate look at the power of this beautiful art form. Following a brief history of ballet and Dance Theatre of Harlem, the performance begins with exercises at the barre and the reasoning behind them before quickly moving on to jumping, partnering and lifts.  Finally, to demonstrate the expressive power of ballet, excerpts from different styles of ballet are presented. Audience members engage with dancers through questions and answers and participate onstage.  Tickets are $14.75 for the special lecture.

This is a once in a lifetime chance to experience the best that ballet has to offer from some of the best to ever step on the stage.

Prince George’s Community College's Center for Performing Arts is a premier, state-of-the-art facility that nurtures and develops students’ passions for dance, music, theater, and communications. The center also provides public access to some of the most renowned, star-studded national productions in music, dance, and theater.  For more information and tickets, visit pgcc.edu/arts or call (301) 546-7272.
