Man’s Best Friend’s Favorite Words

One of the most notable proverbs heard often, especially from dog lovers is that “dogs are man’s best friend.” With the times we are living in, dogs and other pets have been a source of relief and comfort to ease minds from the scary realities of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since everyone has been home practicing social distancing skills (or at least supposedly), it was only right to conduct a study on what causes dogs to tail-wag, react, and get excited when responding to key words and phrases.

A scientific study conducted by experts at OnBuy, consisted of a three-month study and 4,389 pet owners across the United Kingdom discovering and uncovering their dogs’ favorite words and phrases.

Experts at OnBuy looked at the 15 most popular dogs (10 of each breed), varying in sizes and chose 50 small dogs/puppies, 50 medium, and 50 large dogs to study.

To start the study, the dogs’ resting heart rates were taken and averaged to 115 beats per minute (BPM).

After discovering the average BPM, each dogs’ heart rate was then measured when each of the 16 words or phrases were mentioned.

The results of the study revealed the word “walkies” had the most positive reaction and resulted in 156 BPM. The words “dinner”, “food”, and “eat” came in strong at second place with 152 BPM, followed by the word “treat” at 151 BPM.

The results also showed the least loved words and phrases which include “speak” at 105 BPM, “roll over” at 102 BPM, and “shall we go home?” in last place with 100 BPM.

The top five breeds most excited by “happy” commands were French Bulldogs, Beagles, Rottweilers, Labrador Retrievers, and Dachshunds.

It is safe to say our dog friends have energetic reactions to positive stimuli they enjoy engaging in the most.
