Prince George’s Community College Center for Performing Arts Ushers in New Season of Virtual Events

By Cecil Merkerson III

Reimagine art and creativity as Prince George’s Community College’s Center for Performing Arts (CPA) returns after a long hiatus as students, faculty and local artists celebrate diversity in arts and explore social and political issues.

The CPA will continue its arts programs with free online performances beginning Feb. 22. The center hasn’t been open to the public since March 2020, after its initial inaugural fall season. Like many other organizations, the college remains under strict COVID- 19 guidelines and restrictions to maintain safety protocols.

The CPA and academic departments have joined together and collaborated with creativity to present student and local-based artist events across various genres.

Performances include Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, children’s programs featuring The Story of Anne Frank, student art exhibitions, the Defamation Experience, legendary local violinist Chelsey Green and the Green Project, and A Political Forum.

These student performances will be unique as Humanities Department Chair Ennis Allen shared his joy about the upcoming events.

“I’m excited about our student performances, including our theater series, which connects students with playwright and director Janice L. Goldberg, and a video game musical concert, among other events,” Allen said. “We hope to entertain audiences near and far while engaging our community. Additionally, these experiences allow our students to showcase the arts to those considering studying the visual and performing arts here at Prince George’s Community College,” he added.

The Center’s 2021 spring schedule will feature twenty-two performances beginning February 22 with the Theatre Audition Webinar Series Improvisation and ending May 22 with the Prince George’s Philharmonic featuring Chelsey Green and the Green Project. “The arts help people to cope in dark times,” said Center for Performing Arts Director LaNiece Tyree. “Even in these dark times, we’re still trying to make magic happen at the CPA and serve as a place of healing and uplifting our community through the arts,” she said.
