The Return Of Super Freak
Rick James’ Stone City Band Comes to the DMV
Get your leather gear out of the closet (or from that bedroom dresser drawer), grab those funky boots and your freak attitude. The spirit of the father of Punk Funk is coming to the DMV and you know what that means.
It’s Rick James, bitch.
Born in Buffalo, kicking off his musical start in Canada and working his apprenticeship at Motown, James Ambrose Johnson Jr. became Rick James by the late 1970s. With his Stone City Band, Rick proceeded to shred every cliché of the smooth and silky r&b artist with the synchronized dance steps and created a raw, edgy, amped up sound that put pure sex at center stage. When Rick James was in town, you danced til you sweat blood. An onstage and offstage badass, James paved the way for the likes of Boosty and Prince. And MC Hammer will never pay James enough for what Super Freak’s baseline did for his career when he dropped “Can‘t Touch This” in 1990. Rick died in 2004 but he’d made his legendary mark long before then.
This Saturday January 28th 8pm, Rick James' Stone City Band featuring original members and lead singers sound like Rick James & Teena Marie celebrating Rick James' 75th birthday performing all of the greatest hits "Super Freak" "Give It To Me Baby" "Mary Jane" "You & I" "Bustin’ Out" "Sucker For Your Love" "Square Biz" "Fire & Desire" and so many more.
Check it out at Bethesda Blues & Jazz.
