How The Mighty Lions Roared!
Largo Wins Maryland Public Schools 2A State Basketball Title
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES PROCTOR
On Saturday, March 16, 2024, the Largo Lions Boys' varsity Basketball team became the Maryland State 2A Champions. What a difference a year makes. Last year, the team felt sad in that same press room and reflected on the little mistakes that allowed the State 2A Title to allude to them. There were smiles and little things like Cameron Ward taking extra practice free throws at halftime had paid off. The joy they experienced at the Xfinity Center in College Park originated in team bonding activities that began in the summer of 2023. That summer was full of symbolism, including a team walk to the public library to reinforce that athletic achievement would not get them without academic achievement. They often picked each other up when there was an offseason impediment. Watching them from the regional finals onward, they exhibited a determination that allowed them to overcome scoring deficits and little nuances that would have held them back a year earlier.
University of Maryland head basketball coach Kevin Willard was most likely there to scout Cameron Ward Largo, a junior sensation. Cam's 29 points and 16 rebounds did not disappoint, nor did his leadership. His energetic leadership contrasted with the steadying leadership of head coach Rodney Ward, who was incredibly gracious and appreciative of his team's achievement.
