The Sky Bridge at Town Center, a prominent senior living community located in the heart of Largo Town Center, hosted a special choir performance on June 19 to honor Black heritage, culture, and freedom.
Sky Bridge’s community leadership called upon the resident gospel choir to headline the event. The choir, which includes more than 25 members, was formed in late 2024 as the brainchild of La Quetta Golden, a veteran performer and director. The group has since established itself as a beloved part of the community, with successful performances on Christmas, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and other special occasions
During the performance, audience members huddled around a small, modest stage. The choir, dressed head to toe in all black, performed songs carefully curated to reflect the history and lineage of Black culture. Classics included “Down by the Riverside” and “Oh Happy Day,” accompanied by African-style drum music.
Each song featured a different lead singer who brought a unique approach to the performance. After each song, a choir member stood to share a story of Black resilience in true griot fashion.
The performance ended with a standing ovation from the audience and a bow from the choir. But the event’s impact resonated on a level that went beyond music.
Vinny Johnson, a young Black man who attended the event with his family, said the performance reminded him of Juneteenth’s importance in American culture.
“Juneteenth does not get the acknowledgment it deserves, but it’s very instrumental. With the Black experience in America, [the Black community’s] ancestors are responsible for most of the things that make this a great country,” he said.
Alexis Davis, another young spectator, shared similar beliefs. “It’s one day to reflect over 243 years of slavery. That’s over 12 generations,” Davis said. “But I love that we have time to reflect, celebrate, and have this community.”
The Sky Bridge at Town Center’s community choir is expected to perform again throughout the year as new opportunities arise. Information on future performances and events is available on The Sky Bridge at Town Center’s website.
