David W. Smith Sr.: The Warrior Advocate Building Stronger Families and Stronger Communities

For David W. Smith Sr., advocacy is more than a profession—it is a lifelong calling rooted in compassion, purpose and an unwavering commitment to children and families.

A proud Maryland native and lifelong Prince Georgian, Smith has become a familiar and respected voice throughout the region, championing causes that strengthen family relationships, empower fathers and create opportunities for future generations. Yet, despite his many accomplishments, he says the role he values most is being a father.

Maryland is home to approximately 47,200 to 50,000 single-father households, a figure that has grown by over 14% since the early 2000s.

Over the years, Smith has built an impressive career spanning public policy, public relations and advocacy, serving in local and state government, public education systems and higher education. His work has consistently centered on one mission: improving the lives of children and ensuring families have the support they need to thrive.

As co-founder and executive director of the Children's Rights Fund, Smith has dedicated himself to helping families navigate difficult transitions such as divorce and separation. His work promotes shared parenting, healthy co-parenting relationships and maintaining meaningful bonds between children and both parents.

His influence extends far beyond one organization. Smith serves on multiple nonprofit boards, including organizations focused on youth mental health, educational equity and fatherhood engagement. He has also been instrumental in establishing initiatives that place fathers and young men at the center of community conversations, including helping envision both the Prince George's County Commission on Fathers, Men and Boys and Maryland's statewide Governor's Men and Boys Initiative.

Whether speaking before lawmakers, mentoring fathers or collaborating with community leaders, Smith's passion remains unmistakable.

Known affectionately by many as “The Warrior Advocate,” Smith embodies the belief that lasting change begins at home. His life's work is a testament to the power of service, proving that one person's dedication can inspire stronger families, healthier communities and brighter futures for generations to come.
