According to Prince George’s County Public Schools CEO Dr. Monica Goldson, although there are optional models regarding opening schools this fall, a full return toward reopen isn’t likely.
“We are looking at three different models for return this fall. Obviously, a full return is not an option at this time,” she reported at a recent meeting of the Greater Prince George’s Business Roundtable.
The county is currently in phase two of the reopen plan to recover from the challenges of COVID-19. Although the numbers of new positive cases of the virus are on the decline, the county still leads the state in Coronavirus illnesses (over 19,500 as of July 8). The numbers have parents, county health and education officials reluctant to consider a complete reopen in September.
Prince George’s Public Schools surveyed parents and staff about the coming academic year. Goldson said that 46% of county parents with children in schools say they would rather continue distance learning while 51% of staff surveyed they are uncomfortable coming back in the fall under present public health circumstances.
Prince George’s County Schools CEO Dr. Monica Goldson reported that some 60,000 laptops, 500,000 meals, Internet access and tech support were provided to families of public school students during the height of the pandemic and thanked members of the Roundtable who participated and contributed in those efforts.
Goldson provided an update regarding the developing plan for schools reopening. “We have 80 people working on a recovery plan based on where we are,” she says. Click above to listen to Dr. Goldson’s update by clicking the “Dr. Monica Goldson On Schools Reopen And More” audiobar above.
