Board of Education Approves $2.66B Budget For Fiscal Year 2023

An approved $2.66 billion operating budget for Prince George’s County Public Schools will support its five strategic imperatives outlined in the school district’s strategic plan, Transformation 2026: Equity and Excellence – academic innovation, transformational workforce, organizational learning culture, safe and supportive environments and infrastructure, and operational enhancements. The Prince George’s County Board of Education unanimously approved the budget for Fiscal Year 2023 (FY 2023).

“This budget focuses on enhancements we need the most, including student mental health supports and competitive employee compensation,” said Chief Executive Officer Dr. Monica Goldson. “I look forward to continued collaboration with the Board of Education as we focus on striving to meet the goals outlined in our strategic plan.”
Highlights of the FY 2023 budget include strategies for addressing interrupted instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic; expanding language immersion, early learning, and alternative school programs; improving employee compensation and substitute teacher pay; investing in technology upgrades and maintaining 1:1 devices for students; providing mental health supports; and investing in school maintenance and security.
Dr. Goldson released a proposed budget of $2.64 in December. After receiving public input on the budget, the Board presented a $2.63 billion FY 2023 budget to the county. The FY 2023 budget includes $1.37 billion in state funds, $847 million from the county, $316 million from the federal government, $117 million from the fund balance and $13 million from Board sources. The approved budget is $30.2 million more than the Board’s requested budget due to a $15.5 million increase in restricted federal and state funding, additional $2.1 million in unrestricted funding and the committed fund balance of $13.7 million, offset by slightly lower county funding of $1.1 million.
