As Beloved Desserts Around the Globe Are Celebrated on World Chocolate Day, American Favs Make Instagram’s Top 10

By Kevin Drummond

It seems everyone has a sweet tooth, no matter where people live.

To celebrate World Chocolate Day (July 7), United Kingdom cake and desserts experts Jack and Beyond used Instagram to discover the world’s most popular desserts (from a list of 100 ) and which one inspire the most desire---and hashtags.

Topping the list with 2,623,237 million hashtags is Churros, a delicacy from Spain and Mexico. The fried dough is shaped into sticks and dusted in either sugar or cinnamon sugar. They can be enjoyed at breakfast, lunch, or as an after dinner treat alone or with a rich chocolate dipping sauce.

Apple pie, the English-speaking favorite that hails mostly from the United States and the U.K., came in a close second with 2,531,435 million hashtags.

Meanwhile in third place is the s’more, a treat popular with campers, from the U.S. and Canada.  The s’more consists of toasted marshmallows draped with chocolate and squeezed between two pieces of graham crackers. It garnered 2,503,050 hashtags.

Another U.S. dessert, banana bread, finished fourth.  It is best served moist, sweet, and cake-like. It is so popular in the U.S., the date February 23 has been declared National Banana Bread Day.  Banana bread attracted 1,974,071 million hashtags.

The chocolate chip cookie rounded out the top five with 1,887,439 million hashtags.  It originated in the U.S. in the late 1930s when a woman named Ruth Graves Wakefield added chopped Nestle chocolate to a cookie recipe.

Also of interest is the Pavlova, a dessert that has a crispy crust topped with fruit and whipped cream.  It was named after Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova, which ironically was created in Australia and New Zealand.  The Pavlova was number 10 on the list with 1,223,950 hashtags.
