Prince George’s County Seeks Input on Waste and Recycling
Most government agencies let their constituents know what they are going to do for the state, city, county, etc. Prince George’s County is giving its residents a chance to chime in on a long-term strategy for handling waste and recycling.
The County generates approximately 1.6 million tons of waste annually, including - municipal solid waste or MSW (trash and garbage consisting of everyday items discarded by the public); construction and demolition debris; controlled hazardous waste; and sewage.
Prince George’s County Department of the Environment (DoE) has released its draft Resource Recovery Master Plan (RRMP) for public review and written comment to help plan the long-term strategy for the County-managed waste and recycling streams. The County requested the Maryland Environmental Service (MES), in consultation with DoE to assist in the preparation of the document.
"This plan will reduce our reliance on the landfill by exploring new ways to prevent waste from entering the trash stream, especially items that are still useful," said DoE Director Adam Ortiz. “We all have a role in the creation and management of waste, so it’s important we all work together to reduce the unnecessary waste generated by our citizens and businesses.”
