Prince George’s Hosts Inaugural Beautification Day May 4

The battle between winter and spring is over.  Winter has finally left Prince George’s County taking with it the freezing rain, inches of snow and high winds that left downed trees and countless potholes.

Spring has returned and as temperatures rise, Prince George’s communities are taking stock of their yards and neighborhoods.

Dubbed “Growing Green With Pride,” the May 4 county-wide focus on cleaning and greening Prince George’s hopes to spark more than just a nod to the season but also a sweeping new attitude toward county cleanliness.

“This event supports our Beautification Initiative to make our community cleaner and greener by conducting individual community plantings and coordinating beautification activities throughout the County,” said Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks in a recent memo, “Our county is our crown jewel and keeping it clean and aesthetically welcoming is a collective effort.”.

Still within her first six months in office, the new executive heard the call from residents across the county during her campaign to address issues such as littering, illegal dumping and trashing that harm the county’s image and the environment. The Alsobrooks Administration and the County Council seek to address the problem at its roots –  by pushing for a change of heart of all residents that grows from pride. The elected officials are partnering with Prince George’s County Public Schools and the Maryland National-Capital Park and Planning Commission.

Community groups and neighborhood clean-up teams were directed to register with the effort by April 19.

“This county-wide planting and clean-up day will be the culmination of the launch of our beautification campaign,” Alsobrooks said.

Alsobrooks will put her own ideas into action:  “I plan to have my gloves, litter tracker and picker to help out at as many sites as possible,” she said in a county-wide memo.

May 4 is an opportunity for neighbors to get together for a day of cleaning, weed removal and mulching.  From 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. in neighborhoods all across Prince George’s County.  The occasion is a chance for neighbors to clean up and to become re-acquainted after a long winter or to meet for the first time.

Alsobrooks and special guests will host a celebratory event at Watkins Regional Park from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. to thank the volunteers for helping to keep Prince George’s County beautiful and green. It wlll be a picnic celebration with live music, entertainment, free food and more.
