Clean Water Up Stream
Clean Water Partnership and Community Leaders Announced The Completion Of The Briers Mill Run Stream And Bridge Project In New Carrollton, Maryland
Going Green in New Carrollton has started as the Clean Water Partnership announced the Briers Mill Run Stream and Bridge project. Briers Mill Run Stream, which runs through the median of New Carrollton Parkway from Jodie Street to 85th Place and discharges into the Anacostia River, was fully restored with native plantings to prevent erosion and sustain future extreme weather events. A focus for this project in the New Carrollton community also includes the revitalization of critical walkways for local families.
This isn’t a new project; however, as the design phase began in 2019 and now in final completion in 2022, the CWP Outreach Team remained in communication with the local community and officials at various public meetings. With constant input from the community, the CWP team modified designs as their goal was to minimize the impact of the construction process by preserving existing trees in the area.
New Carrollton Mayor Phelecia E. Nembhard spoke about the benefits of the bridge and what it means for the city’s infrastructure in the area. “Our community has gained a restored stream channel containing native plantings that beautify the stream running through the neighborhood while providing meaningful water quality improvements. The project includes a 30-year maintenance commitment and installation of a new bridge to revitalize the walkability of the neighborhood,”
CWP Program Manager Eric Jones also added his excitement about the partnership with officials to give back to the people of New Carrollton. “The Clean Water Partnership is thrilled to deliver a revitalized Briers Mill Run Stream, updated nearby walkways and pedestrian bridge back to the New Carrollton,”
