June 27 Is National HIV Testing Day - Take The Test
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 1.1 million people in the United States have HIV, including about 162,500 (14%, or 1 in 7) people who do not know they have it. Each year on June 27, The CDC observes National HIV Testing Day. They partner with health departments and other organizations to raise awareness and plan events about the importance of HIV testing and early diagnosis of HIV.
This year’s theme is “Doing It My Way”. Testing can be done on one’s own term and in one’s own way. “Doing It My Way” encourages everyone to get involved-be tested- whether at home, at the clinic, or in the company of a friend or loved one and get the word out by sharing personal testaments of why testing is important, what is the motivation to get tested and stay healthy, and how the testing was done. Personal testaments can be shared on social media by clicking the link, #DoingItMyWay
In Prince George’s County, the Health Department is partnering with Us Helping Us People Into Living and Heart to Hand, Inc. to offer free HIV testing during a community festival to recognize National HIV Testing Day and to raise awareness about the importance of county residents knowing their HIV status.
There will be free on-site screenings for HIV and STIs, there will be HIV and STI educational materials available, giveaways, refreshments and fun activities for the family. The event will be held June 27, from 2:00pm to 8:00pm at 8240 Professional Place, Landover, MD.
