A Better State Of Care

A Better State Of Care

UM Capital Region Health Center President & CEO Nathaniel Richardson

A Closer Look At The Cancer Center At UM Capital Region Health Center

The words of UM Capital Region Health Center President and CEO Nathaniel Richardson capture the immediate and long-term impact intended of the new cancer center: “When we moved into the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center in June 2021, we moved with a purpose—to deliver high-quality, compassionate care in a modern and comfortable setting to Prince George’s County residents.

From day one, we planned to provide comprehensive cancer care and treatment services here in Largo. I am excited to share that the Cancer Center at UM Capital Region Health, housed inside the new 100,000-square-foot state-of-the-art Center for Advanced Medicine facility, is now open.”

The center will provide the following services that will help address the following needs:

  • Healthcare professionals are working diligently to advance cancer care and improve survival rates, and much progress has been made.

  • University of Maryland Medical System is bringing complete cancer care diagnosis and treatment services in one convenient location - the new Cancer Center at University of Maryland Capital Region Health

  • Each year, approximately 31,000 people in Maryland are diagnosed with cancer.

  • In Prince George’s County, the four most prevalent types of cancer are breast, colon, lung, and prostate.

  • While screening rates in Prince George’s County are on par with the rest of Maryland in terms of screening for breast cancer with mammography or colon cancer with colonoscopy, access to care is an issue. However, [the county is still] recognizing advanced cancer presentations and the increased incidence of late-stage cancers in the county.

  • The new Cancer Center at University of Maryland Capital Region Health provides chemotherapy and medical oncology, radiation therapy and surgical cancer services in one location so patients don’t have to travel to multiple doctor’s offices in different locations for care.

  • The main purpose of the Cancer Center at UM Capital Region Health is to provide complete cancer care in a comfortable, convenient setting.

  • Systematic and systemic obstacles-When patients are receiving cancer therapy, they're tired, they're fatigued. They may not have family members or someone who can drive them, and that can really affect care.

  • [The county wants} to be sure patients who are diagnosed with cancer have reliable, high-quality access to the treatments and care their diagnosis requires.

  • Patients at the Cancer Center can access all of the cancer services they need in one building.

  • A dedicated trained nurse serves as a focal point to help patients coordinate appointments and understand their care; help patients see the big picture and make sure their needs are being met.

  • The Cancer Center at UM Capital Region Health is affiliated with University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

  • Patients have access to a full spectrum of cancer services, screenings, and specialists in one integrated medical system for improved coordination of care that reduces complications for patients and improves outcomes.
