Sen. Alsobrooks Addresses Black Women’s Health With New Plan

Senator Angela Alsobrooks Supports Federal Push To Expand Uterine Fibroid Treatment And Research

By B. Thayer

Senator Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) is taking decisive steps to confront a silent but widespread health crisis: uterine fibroids. During a press conference this week, Alsobrooks announced her plan to introduce the senate companion bill to the Uterine Fibroid Intervention and Gynecological Health Treatment (U-FIGHT) Act - legislation designed to expand access to early screening, diagnosis, and treatment of fibroids, which disproportionately impact Black women.

In collaboration with Congresswomen Shontel Brown (D-Ohio) and Yvette D. Clarke (D-N.Y.), Alsobrooks is joining a broader legislative effort to raise public awareness and invest in research and less invasive treatment options. "No woman should have to suffer in silence," Alsobrooks said, standing beside advocates and lawmakers who have made uterine health a national priority.

The U-FIGHT Act includes funding for public education campaigns, earlier screenings, and research into better therapies - vital support for the millions of women silently living with this despairing condition. Among them is actress Lupita Nyong’o, who joined Alsobrooks to share her own fibroid journey and advocate for early education and optimizing care options.

In Prince George’s County, where Senator Alsobrooks previously served as County Executive, the issue hits close to home. The county’s large population of Black women makes this legislation increasingly urgent. Early intervention could prevent years of unmanaged pain and complications.

Passing the U-FIGHT Act will require continued public pressure and consensus-driven cooperation. Advocacy from leaders, constituents, and renowned figures like Nyong’o are expected to be key to moving this package forward in Congress.

If passed, the legislation could mark a turning point in women’s health equity, signaling that Black women’s pain is no longer ignored - and their health no longer sidelined.
