Women: Health Is On The Way
A New Promise for Mothers and Families Rises in Prince George’s County
A fresh chapter in women’s healthcare is taking shape in Lanham, where cranes, construction crews, and community optimism now surround the campus of Luminis Health Doctors Community Medical Center. It’s a chapter that will address the pain and loss that women and their families have endured for decades. With the recent groundbreaking of a long-awaited Women’s Health Pavilion, local leaders say the project represents far more than bricks and steel—it is a direct investment in safer births, stronger families, and healthier futures.
The new 67,000-square-foot Women’s Health Pavilion is expected to open in late 2028, bringing modern, centralized maternity and women’s services to one of Maryland’s most populous and fastest-growing regions. For years, Prince George’s County families have faced limited local obstetrical options, forcing many expectant mothers to travel outside the county for delivery care. According to officials, nearly 8 in 10 women currently leave the county to give birth because of inadequate access to maternity services.
That reality has made the pavilion one of the most significant healthcare projects now underway in the county.
“This groundbreaking represents our commitment to improving the health and well-being of the communities we serve,” said Tori Bayless, chief executive officer of Luminis Health. She described the facility as a promise to deliver compassionate, high-quality, equitable care close to home.
Designed Around Women’s Needs
The three-story state-of-the-art pavilion has been planned as a comprehensive destination for women before pregnancy, during childbirth, and throughout recovery and wellness afterward.
Among the featured services will be:
Private labor and delivery rooms
Dedicated Cesarean-section operating rooms
Midwife-supported birthing suites
Postpartum recovery units
Nursery services
A Level II Special Care Nursery for newborns needing added medical attention
Future expansion space for additional women’s services
A rooftop helipad with direct access to the Emergency Department
The design reflects a modern understanding that maternity care extends well beyond the delivery room. Families increasingly seek comfort, privacy, continuity of care, and specialized support during one of life’s most meaningful moments.
Deneen Richmond said the facility embraces a coordinated maternal health model that supports women before pregnancy, through prenatal care, during delivery, and throughout the critical postpartum period.
Serving Thousands Each Year
Once fully operational, hospital leaders expect the pavilion to help deliver approximately 2,000 babies annually. That figure means thousands of mothers, infants, partners, grandparents, and extended family members will feel the impact of the new center every year.
Beyond births alone, the pavilion is expected to serve women seeking specialty care, consultations, follow-up services, and maternal support programs. For many families, it will mean shorter travel times, stronger local healthcare connections, and the comfort of receiving care in their own community.
Addressing Health Equity
The new pavilion also arrives amid urgent public health concerns. Officials noted that Black women in the region face maternal mortality rates roughly 50 percent higher than the national average.
That stark disparity has made maternal health equity a pressing issue across Maryland and the nation. Supporters say this new facility can play a major role in closing care gaps by increasing access to prenatal monitoring, safer delivery settings, postpartum follow-up, and emergency support when complications arise.
For Prince George’s County—a majority-Black jurisdiction with nearly one million residents—the project carries special significance.
Costs and Campus Transformation
Official described the initiative as a major modernization investment tied to both women’s healthcare expansion and broader hospital upgrades.
Those campus improvements include:
Modernized operating rooms
Updated interventional radiology areas
Enhanced sterile processing spaces
A redesigned Emergency Department
Expanded laboratory services
Improved food and nutrition facilities
Major utility and infrastructure upgrades
In other words, the Women’s Health Pavilion is not a standalone project—it is the centerpiece of a broader transformation at Doctors Community Medical Center.
Economic Impact Beyond Medicine
The greatest return on investment will be measured in healthier pregnancies, safer births, and peace of mind for families who no longer need to leave their county for care.
As ceremonial shovels turned the soil in Lanham, many saw more than a groundbreaking. They saw a foundation being laid for the next generation of Prince George’s families.
