County Council Members and Others Host Activities Celebrating The Dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On Day Of Service
The day has been known as the ‘Day of Service,’ when organizations and people celebrate the life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr., an influential American civil rights leader who was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement. Several events took place around the county hosted by elected officials and nonprofits, to celebrate on MLK Day, which is celebrated each year on the third Monday in January.
On January 12, The Prince George's County Memorial Library System hosted a virtual visit to the National Mall memorial built in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s honor. A program included a discussion of his legacy and how his inspirational words on this powerful memorial have impacted each of us and the nation. The Prince George's County Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. honored Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day of service program on January 17 at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, Md.
Council Vice-Chair Harrison hosted a live stream of the 2nd Annual District 9 Day of Service Awards on January 17. Vice-Chair Harrison co-hosted the event with Taylor Thomas. The super lineup included: Congressman Anthony Brown, Council Chair Calvin Hawkins, R&B sensation Maysa, gospel legend Stephen Hurd, local vocalist Kenny Sway, Vybe Band, poet Tasha Carter, and Saxophonist Edward Martin! ● District 1 Council Member Tom Dernoga participated in Laurel City’s Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Event on January 16. Council Member Dernoga also participated in the City of College Park Tribute to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. virtual event on January 17.
● Council Chair Calvin Hawkins partnered with the First Baptist Church of Highland Park to host the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Grocery Giveaway on January 17.
● At-Large Council Mel Franklin co-sponsored the 5th “MLK Day – A Day On” event at Beltway Plaza Mall in Greenbelt, Md. Free meals and free booster shots were provided.
● District 3 Council Member Dannielle Glaros participated in the Latin American Youth Center’s (LAYC) Virtual Event on January 17. Council Member Glaros also participated in a Litter Clean-up organized by The Riverdale Park Sustainability Committee.
