Since 2006, The Alice Ferguson Foundation’s Trash Summit has brought together elected officials, business leaders, community activists and municipal managers to explore local and regional policies and efforts to reduce trash in communities along the Potomac River Watershed, particularly along the Anacostia River.

For example, in the District of Columbia, residents no longer place old newspapers and magazines in plastic bags for the recycle bin (the plastic bags tend to clog and halt recycling equipment). Instead, old periodicals are dropped directly into bins. Working with the Alice Ferguson Foundation, the District continues to find solutions to combat plastic pollution.

This year’s Trash Summit will explore private sector leadership on issues of plastic pollution prevention. The public is invited to join the conversation at the summit. This one-day event will feature presentations from experts, topical panels, networking with local leaders, discussion roundtables, best practices, information sharing, and more.

Guest speakers include Adam Ortiz, Prince George’s County Department of the Environment; Mary M. Cheh, Council of the District of Columbia; Conrad MacKerron, As You Sow and Dann Sklarew, George Mason University. The event takes place from 9am-5pm at George Mason University Founders Hall.
