Local Volunteer Events Aimed at Cleaning Up and Beautifying Our Environments

Despite what politicians may be spinning, we are nothing without our Earth.

On Earth Day, join dozens or thousands of others – unplug from technology and celebrate nature with events happening in our local area. Aimed at cleaning up our environment and beautifying our neighborhoods, here are some fun-filled activities for people of all ages.

G.E.A.R.: Earth Day

  • Event: April 20, 7-10pm. Celebrate Earth Day by taking a pledge to reduce waste and recycle more. It’s your neighborhood, your environment, and your Earth! Make the commitment to not only take care of the present but future generations as well! For ages 10-17. Free with M-NCPPC youth ID.

 

Anacostia Watershed Society

Anacostia Watershed Society

  • Event: April 21, 9am-12pm. Join thousands of volunteers for the traditional Anacostia Watershed Society’s Earth Day Cleanup and Celebration. All along the Anacostia River and its tributary streams throughout the watershed in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties. After the cleanup, all volunteers are invited to the big celebration. Choose your site from the map by clicking on a marker. Red sites have hit capacity. Green sites are open for registration.

 

Ward 4 Community Earth Day Cleam Up & Celebration*

  • Event: April 21, 11am-4pm. Join Uptown Main Street, the Community Alliance for Upper Fourteenth Street, and the Kennedy Street Development Corporation for a special cleanup and celebration. Help beautify the corridor by sprucing up the public spaces and participating in a community art project. Gloves, garbage bags and refreshments will be available. There will be some tools on-hand, but volunteers are encouraged to bring small gardening tools if they have them. There will be four other locations as well. Register to volunteer. A community block party and Main Street designation begins at 1:45pm at 14th & Kennedy Streets. Delicious food, family-friendly activities and drinks will be provided! *Community service credits are available for students

 

Recycled Garden: Earth Day Celebration

  • Event: April 21, 11am-2pm. Join others for a day of celebrating the resources and beauty the Earth provides. Enjoy participating in fun and educational Earth Day activities for the whole family. Learn ways to turn your trash into garden treasures, while earning special prizes and incentives to help with your future outdoor projects. Free composting Workshop and Free Weed Warriors Workshop presented by the City of Bowie Green Team. All ages welcome. Cost: Resident $4; Non-resident $6. Purchase tickets at this link.

 

Robin Hill Farm & Vineyards

  • Event: April 21, 12-4pm. Every guest who visits the winery will be given a packet of seeds that is filled with easy-to-grow wildflowers that help pollinators! Birds, bats, bees, butterflies, beetles, and other small mammals that pollinate plants are called pollinators and are responsible for bringing us one out of every three bites of food. They also sustain our ecosystems and produce our natural resources by helping plants reproduce. They will also feature a local honey farmer who will host an informative talk at 3pm, and will be selling their delicious honey all day. This is open to the general public, no tickets needed.
