Community Day Success Showcases Fun, Unity And Pride

It takes a perfect day in Spring to help spark the contagious energy of hometown pride and Upper Marlboro cornered the market on that energy May 18.

Hundreds of Prince George’s residents turned out for the 2019 Community Day in Upper Marlboro.

Attendees enjoyed food, sales vendors, kids rides and activities, and lots of family-friendly entertainment on the main stage across from the County Administration Building (CAB).

The event began with a parade that started at the Showplace Arena and wound its way up Water Street, along Main Street, and down Governor Oden Bowie Drive to the stage. The parade featured appearances from local and state elected officials, dance groups, marching bands, area first responders and included vintage cool, classic Corvettes.

At the parade’s conclusion, Upper Marlboro Mayor Tonga Turner took the main stage and welcomed attendees and special guests.

“There are great things happening here in Upper Marlboro,” Turner said, “and this Community Day is a symbol of our success and forward momentum. I thank everyone for coming and being part of this community celebration.”

Other speakers included State Senator Douglas J.J. Peters (District 23) and County Council member Sydney J. Harrison (District 9). Other elected officials who attended Saturday’s event included Seat Pleasant Mayor Eugene W. Grant and Prince George’s County Clerk of the Court Mahasin El Amin.
