Students Not Being Forgotten In Wake of COVID-19 Restrictions

As the Corona Virus continues to adversely affect residents’ health, economy, businesses and financial status; households are beginning to feel the pinch. Many households are without jobs, all Maryland public schools are closed through Friday, April 24, and as stores struggle to restock merchandise-shoppers are finding more and more shelves empty of the basic items needed to exist on a day to day basis. The County Executive and her administration are working hard to assist all in need.  While many needs are being addressed, one need has been provided for— lunches for the County’s school children.

With a number of locations already open and making sure those children continue to receive free lunches, ten new elementary school sites will be opening for breakfast, lunch and a snack starting Monday, March 30, bringing the total number of student meal sites to 43.

The new meal sites are Bradbury Heights, Brandywine, Carrollton, Glassmanor, Hollywood, James McHenry, Ridgecrest, Riverdale, Robert Frost and Woodridge. Three sites have been closed due to low participation: J. Frank Dent and Longfields elementary schools and Benjamin Stoddert Middle School.

Under relaxed federal guidelines, parents may now pick up the “grab and go” meals. Parents must bring a student ID or report card with them if the student is unable to come to the site.

Meals are available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. School system staff will be on hand to distribute meals in the cafeteria or parking lot depending on the weather. Students may pick up the meals and snack in one visit. Parents and guardians are not required to accompany students nor are students required to show ID.

The full list of sites is available below and at https://www.pgcps.org/coronavirus.
