The county executive, who won her seat with a record-setting margin of over 60% of the vote, extends some of her political capital toward asking county voters to join her in asking the governor to adopt an election plan that may be safer for voters during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Will you stand with me in calling for safe November elections? Your signature will send a message to Governor Hogan: we must adopt these guidelines to protect the health of our residents and election judges so we can all safely participate in the November election,” Alsobrooks wrote in her outreach to voters.

The Alsobrooks petition calls for the following:

  • Send a ballot to every registered voter

  • Extend the early voting timeline by 5 days so it runs from October 22 through Election Day on November 3, 2020

  • Allow the County to expand early voting centers to 15 locations

  • Reduce the 244 polling locations to the 15 early voting locations

  • Eliminate the vote by mail application which has proven disastrous in other jurisdictions

  • Ensure early voting locations are available for same-day registration and for those who may not have received a ballot in time

  • Install secure drop-off ballot boxes at all the approved polling locations

“The residents of Prince George's County have made great sacrifices to protect their neighbors and loved ones during this pandemic. I firmly believe that our duty, as community leaders and elected officials, is to ensure that citizens do not have to choose between personal safety and their sacred right to participate in our democracy. Many of our relatives fought, protested, and died for the right to vote.  Americans have held elections during a Civil War, world wars, and Depressions, and we can and should do so safely, even during this pandemic,” she says.
