Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen Addresses Prince George’s County Council
Amid historic national strife and change, Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen joined the Prince George’s County Council Jan 19 and shared insights on the current state of national affairs and offered glimpses into the near future and how the county factored into some of those actions.
Van Hollen immediately noted that President Biden would make several executive decisions regarding assuring DACA stability, extending federal eviction moratoriums, deferral of student loans, ending the ban on travel to Muslim nations and creating stronger efforts around COVID-19 relief.
The senator discussed the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Package announced by President Biden just days before he took office. Van Hollen said that the small but definitive Democratic advantage in the Senate should lead to support for the measure – along with debate and legislation regarding social justice, global warming and other sweeping issues facing the nation and of interest to county residents.
Van Hollen fielded questions from County Councilmembers ranging from revisiting the U.S. Census and the location of the FBI headquarters to funding for PPE and the pathway to citizenship for immigrants.
