Trump Impeachment May Depict Senators As Out of Touch With The Majority Of Americans, Fears Of More Intimidation And Violence To Come

The impeachment trial of former President Donald J. Trump revealed unusually stark numbers of Americans responding to the Senate’s return of an acquittal to the defeated commander in chief for the Jan. 6 insurrection at the capitol building.

In a nation that has been split down the middle on most issues and in its elected officials for over 10 years leading to hyper-partisan gridlock, the Trump acquittal has led to an unusually one-sided popular view of the matter by Americans. MSNBC reports that nearly 60% of Americans believe that Trump should have been convicted based on the impeachment trial (ABC News/IPSOS poll reports 58% believe Mr. Trump should have been convicted).

An informal survey of Prince George’s Suite Magazine & Media readers and followers suggests an even stronger response: Nearly 100% replied that the former president should have been found guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors and convicted.

A majority of Americans, 55-43%, say Trump should not be allowed to hold elected office in the future, according to a Quinnipiac poll.

In spite of the fact that overwhelming numbers of Americans believe Trump to be guilty, Republican senators remain in lockstep in their support of the disgraced former president citing false procedural claims as the rationale for excusing Mr. Trump and voting to acquit.

Analysts suggest that Republican senators remain loyal to Trump for fear of being primaried by a more Trump-loyal opponent in the midterm elections. As a party, the facts may challenge this point as Republicans have lost control of all three branches of government under Trump’s watch.

Further, Prince George’s Suite Magazine & Media readers believe the acquittal will lead to more gun-wielding intimidation and violence by far right extremists. Ninety percent of those responding anticipate more domestic terrorist violence in the months and years ahead as a result of the leniency given to Trump regarding his role in the insurrection.
