Prince George’s County Leaders Team To Aid Job-Providing Businesses
GIANT Foods and Capital Lighting & Supply To Get Expansion Loans
“We have to increase our commercial tax base in the county,” said Director of Government Operations Fiscal Policy Howard Stone minutes after the Prince George’s County Council voted 11 – 0 in support of $250,000 grants to both GIANT Food Companies and Capital Lighting and Supply, LLC April 20.
Both companies are headquartered in Prince Georges County. Capital Lighting and Supply reportedly employs some 600 workers. Giant Food of Maryland, LLC, is headquartered in Landover and has some 169 stores. It employs 22,000 workers.
“Supporting both these companies in this way is proof-positive of what we’re trying to do from an economic development standpoint.”
The veteran compliance officer works with the Government Operations for Fiscal Policy Committee that reviewed the proposals and processes submitted by the Economic Development Corporation’s Economic Development Incentive Fund (“EDI Fund”).
“Anytime we can retain a business or help a business to grow in the county, we are supporting our economic tax base,” he said noting that the Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation President and CEO David Iannucci and his office was especially diligent in working to retain Capital Lighting and Supply in the county.
The Maryland Department of Commerce MEDAF program is also a part of the incentive loan package and process.
The grant will be used for “eligible project costs associated with supporting the expansion of headquarters for Giant Foods to Landover, MD and eligible associated costs at the project site.”
Similarly, in the case of Capital Lighting and Supply, LLC, the monies will be used for “eligible project costs associated with supporting the expansion of headquarters for Capital Lighting to Upper Marlboro, MD and eligible associated costs at the project site.”
