New Name Honors First Latina To The Supreme Court

Adelphi Middle School will honor the first Latin American woman Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor Middle School and rename its school after her. Championed by District 2 Council Member Deni Taveras, this historic name change will mean a bright future for the Adelphi  school and the surrounding community.

Approved by the Prince George’s County Public Schools Board of Education, the motion to honor the inspiring accomplishments of Justice Sotomayor was presented during a recent meeting. Council Member Taveras, recognized as a strong and steady voice for the Latino community in Prince George’s County, offered testimony expressing her support for the name change and encouraging the Board of Education to “make history” on behalf of the County’s diverse student population.

“Of the 200-plus school buildings in Prince George’s County, only one is named after a Hispanic historical figure and Cesar Chavez is a figure with whom most of our Latino student body does not identify. Over 38% of Prince George’s County Public School students are Hispanic and deserve inspiring role models that they can strive to emulate – they cannot be that which they cannot see. The renaming of the new Adelphi Middle School, located in the heart of the Latino community, to the Sonia Sotomayor Middle School is game-changing and a win-win for Prince George’s County. Our students and community deserve this honor and recognition.”

Located at 8820 Riggs Road, the school is the first in Council District 2 constructed utilizing the P3 construction model, supported by Council Member Taveras. The new school, scheduled to open next school year, is expected to relieve overcrowding at both Buck Lodge Middle School in Adelphi and Nicholas Orem Middle School in Hyattsville.
