The County’s New Curbside Bulky Trash Collection Program Begins Feb. 14

“Clear the Curb” was created by the county to modernize and streamline the waste collection services, especially in the area of bulky trash. Residents raised issues with bulky trash pickups taking too long through the county’s current appointment-based system and soon after action was in progress for an improved curbside bulky trash collection program that will begin on February 14, 2022.

Watch the county council Feb 10 discussion on the matter here.

Starting next week, the county will offer an upgraded bulky trash collection service for more than 175,000 households. This program will align with The Beautification Initiative to combat illegally dumped items in the communities, neighborhoods and environment. Starting next week, residents can set out two bulky items or 2 large trash bags with small household items per week with their regular trash for pickup from their county-provided trash hauler. All bulky items placed curbside need to be too large to fit in a county-issued or regular trash cart and need to be placed next to the trash cart for collection. Bulky items placed in other areas at the curb will not be collected. Click here to learn more. Acceptable items that can be left curbside include:

●   Doors and cabinets

●   Hot water heaters and push lawn mowers (remove the gas tank and drain the oil from lawn mowers)

●   Mattresses and box springs (must be covered in protective plastic encasement)

●   Furniture, such as sofas, coffee tables, bed head/footboards, dressers, tables, chairs, etc.

●   Carpet and padding (limit is 324 square feet, rolled and tied on ends)

Instead of two bulky items, residents can also place two large trash bags with small household items per week with their regular trash collection. Examples of smaller household items include knick-knacks, home décor, and small kitchen appliances (toaster ovens, blenders, air fryers, crock pots). Missed collections should be reported through PGC311.

White good items, which include large appliances like refrigerators, freezers, stoves, washing machines, and dryers, and scrap tires will be accepted by appointment only. Residents will be able to schedule appointments for those items by contacting PGC311 or online here.
