Wes Moore Declares Victory As Dem Nominee In Gov Race
Days after voters cast their ballots July 19, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wes Moore declared victory in seeking the nomination.
“It’s with great humility and pride that I accept the confidence that the voters in Maryland have placed in me as their Democratic nominee for Governor. We were successful in this campaign because Marylanders, from every region of the state, united behind a vision for a state that truly leaves no one behind – more economic opportunity, better public schools, safer communities,” Moore said.
The Moore camp was forced to delay making any announcement as the race was too close to call Tuesday night. Thousands of mail-in ballots were submitted in the primary election season. By Maryland law, the Maryland Board of Elections could not begin counting mail-in ballots until Thursday.
Peter Franchot, who was tracking third against Moore and Tom Perez, suspended his campaign July 22. Perez remained committed to the race noting that many of the mail-in ballots were from Montgomery County – his home base.
But Moore, who maintained an early lead in the race since Tuesday night, decided to declare victory July 23.
“I commend the talented field of opponents who sought the nomination alongside me, and look forward to working with them,” Moore said.
The candidate cast a first shot across the bow of his opponent, Dan Cox, the Republican candidate who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
“Marylanders will face a very clear choice this November,” Moore said. “A choice between unity and division, a future built on optimism versus the cynical politics of conspiracy theories and fear, and between the values we embrace as Marylanders and Donald Trump’s divisive and dangerous MAGA movement. Dan Cox is so far outside the mainstream that I believe he would be dangerous for our families and communities if he were allowed anywhere near the Governor’s office.”
